Issue 1: Editors’ Note

Dear Lovely Readers,

At last, the first issue of The Post Grad Journal is here! What a journey it’s been. We first started a virtual poetry class in the midst of COVID-19. We were living in three different cities, navigating post-graduate life in the middle of a pandemic. We were able to reconnect through our love of poetry and the shared experience of using writing as a coping mechanism. Through our words we explored the joys and heartbreaks of the new world around us, and we remembered what had drawn us to written word in college. Rachel (you could say our best student) suggested expanding into something that could connect us with a larger community, and so The Post Grad Journal was born!

When we created the journal we knew we wanted to focus on creating a space for work focused on the authentic human experience, but we weren’t sure where to begin, or if we’d even get any submissions. When the first one came in on the night we launched, we were so excited we read it right then at 12:27 am. Since then, we have been lucky enough to receive more amazing submissions than we had thought to hope for. We are so grateful to all of you who chose to share your work with our little journal.

The poems in this first issue made us laugh, wonder, cry, reflect on this world we live in. We started this journal because we wanted to find and share poetry that is accessible to everyone, that makes us feels things, that helps us learn. As Sarah Kay said in her glorious TED Talk If I should Have A Daughter, “I use poetry to help me work through what I don't understand.” There has been a lot to work through this past year. There will be a lot to work through in 2021. We are simply here to offer you these poems and hope that they can be a part of your journey in some small way.
