Poppyseed

The day we first heard the words
“global pandemic,” you were already
growing in my womb, about the size
of a poppyseed, your cells collecting
just so.

The world grew tender and fuzzy,
like a flower bud.

We walked the same path
day after day, the ground growing
familiar under our feet, exchanging
gentle smiles with each passer-by,
a common thread linking us all,

and all the while, you were there.
